Samplings from June 2, 2018

SH LogoWell, it’s the Saturday after the Deep take over, and there is another take over by another Florida Brewery. Today was about the Swamp Head Brewery. From the few beers that I have sampled from Swamp Head, they seemed pretty average or they just weren’t hitting the right notes with me. This afternoon, I did find a couple of beers that resonated pretty well with me.

Let’s talk about some of the beers.

SH - Boar DiddleyBoar Diddley

Brewer: Swamp Head (Gainesville, FL)
Style: New England IPA
ABV: 7.0%
IBU: ?
Served: Draft
Glass and Serving Size: 10 Ounce Tulip
Rating: Good

The night started out pretty good, with the Boar Diddley. In the last couple of months, there have been a couple of New England IPAs that have been tapped. It’s been a little confusing trying to make the distinction between IPAs and New England IPAs, I think I would have to call them close relatives. I think that Swamp Head got the Boar Diddley right. It’s a good IPA that I will definitely go back to.

The Boar Diddley pours a cloudy light gold color with a creamy white head. The beer is cloudy because New England IPAs are unfiltered. The aroma with strongly citrus with high hoppiness. The flavor is strongly citrus, leaning toward orange and a strong hoppy finish. In all it’s a highly enjoyable beer.

SH - 10-10-1010-10-10

Brewer: Swamp Head (Gainesville, FL)
Style: Imperial IPA
ABV: 10.0%
IBU: 110
Served: Draft
Glass and Serving Size: 10 Ounce Tulip
Rating: Meh

I don’t know if it was the progression of beer this night, but following up the Boar Diddley with the 10-10-10 just didn’t work out. I didn’t care much for the 10-10-10 because it had one quality of an Imperial beer that I don’t care much for. For this reason, I am giving it a Meh rating.

The 10-10-10 poured a dark gold with a light white head. The aroma was overly sweet with a slight hop. The flavor was think sweet and slightly boozy. When I drink an IPA I want a high degree of hops with citrus overtones and maybe a hint of bitter. I dislike when a beer’s flavors don’t meld together well and when you can taste the alcohol level.

SH - 10th Anniversary10th Anniversary Ale

Brewer: Swamp Head (Gainesville, FL)
Style: Imperial IPA
ABV: 10.0%
IBU: ?
Served: Draft
Glass and Serving Size: 10 Ounce Tulip
Rating: Good

What the 10-10-10 didn’t get right, the 10th Anniversary Ale did. The 10th Anniversary fell more in line with my expectations of an Imperial IPA. It was a solid Imperial IPA, but it was missing something that would have made it great. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed this beer enough to drink a second glass. It’s a shame that it’s not a regular brew.

The beer pours a dark golden color with a light white head. The aroma a light refreshing citrus. The flavor was a light citrus up front followed by a pleasant hoppy finish. This was more in line with what my expectations were for an Imperial IPA. First and foremost, the blend of flavors hid the fact that it was a 10% ABU beer.

SH - Catherines PassionCatherine’s Passion

Brewer: Swamp Head (Gainesville, FL)
Style: Russian Imperial Stout
ABV: 10.0%
IBU: 57
Served: Draft
Glass and Serving Size: 10 Ounce Tulip
Rating: Good

Wow, three IPAs and then a Russian Imperial Stout, that’s a lot of flavor to go through. This is the next good beer that I had from Swamp Head. It’s a solid representative of an Imperial Stout. With a solid flavor profile, it was one of the better beers of the night.

The beer poured dark with a thick mocha head. The aroma was sweet above all else with hints of dark roasted malts and coffee. The flavor was think and sweet with an overwhelming dark roasted maltiness. The dark roasted malt probably overwhelmed the coffee so that it wasn’t overly apparent. With a stronger coffee presence, this beer might have been great.

Summary

Two good nights of sampling beers in less than a week. Tonight was a lot of good beers from Swamp Head. In the past, Swamp Head didn’t resonate well with me, but this time there were quite a few beers that I really enjoyed. This changed my overall impression of Swamp Head. Who’d have thought that something good would come out of Gainesville. Just Kidding.
